Geography and Landscape

A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

A landscape rooted in the past and a people embracing the spirit of modernity — this is the defining character of Bharanikkavu Block Panchayat.

This region, a small yet naturally blessed part of Kerala, may be described geographically as a miniature representation of the state itself. Although it belongs predominantly to the midland region (Idanadu) adjoining the coastal belt, its eastern parts display certain characteristics of the highlands. The western part, meanwhile, forms part of the coastal plain.

Nature, however, seems to have left one thing wanting — the region does not have a major river or a large natural water body. Perhaps to compensate for this, the area has been endowed with abundant groundwater resources, numerous small water bodies, ponds, and streams. The region also receives generous monsoon rainfall, which replenishes these water resources.

A Changing Rural Landscape

Greenery is everywhere.

Fruit-bearing trees once crowned the hills, while the valleys were filled with fragrant cash crops and vegetable cultivation. Small and large paddy fields, which seemed to create a thousand rippling waves whenever the wind passed over them, stretched across the landscape. Winding village roads curved through the countryside, and simple, unpretentious houses dotted the landscape. Above all, the innocent and hardworking rural people treasured these village scenes deep within their hearts.

The rural landscape has undergone considerable change over the years. Today, rubber, an important cash crop, has spread across the hills and gradually extended into the valleys. Many of the rural roads have been converted into tarred roads. Traditional village houses are rapidly transforming into modern concrete structures.

The outlook of the farming community has also undergone significant changes. Valuable agricultural land, a precious gift of nature, is gradually disappearing from the landscape. The delicate ecological balance that nature had so generously maintained is slowly being disturbed.

The question remains: Who is losing in this transformation — nature or humanity?

Physical Geography

Bharanikkavu Block Panchayat is situated in the southeastern part of Alappuzha District. The region shares its boundaries with Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts.

The surrounding Gram Panchayats include Thekkekkara, Chettikulangara, Krishnapuram, Ochira, Thazhava, Sooranad North, Pallikkal, Pandalam, Venmony, and Thazhakkara.

The principal slope of the terrain is generally from east to west. However, the eastern parts of the region show slopes towards both the north and the south.

The eastern parts of the Block, particularly Palamel and Nooranad Gram Panchayats, contain numerous hills ranging in elevation from approximately 20 metres to 90 metres above sea level. As one moves westward from these Panchayats towards Chunakkara and Thamarakkulam, the variation in elevation gradually decreases.

A similar physical character can be observed in the eastern parts of Vallikunnam and Bharanikkavu Gram Panchayats. The western parts of these Panchayats merge into the coastal plain.

The elevation within the Block Panchayat ranges from approximately 15 metres to 90 metres above mean sea level.

Based on its physical features, the Block Panchayat can conveniently be divided into three geographical zones:

1. Eastern Region — Hills and Valleys

The eastern region is characterized by moderately elevated hills interspersed with valleys. This landscape is particularly evident in the Palamel and Nooranad areas.

2. Central Region — Low Hills and Valleys

The central region consists of low hills and relatively shallow valleys. The variation in elevation is less pronounced compared with the eastern region.

3. Western Region — Coastal Plain

The western region forms part of the coastal plain, with relatively level terrain and lower elevations compared with the eastern parts of the Block.
